A detailed plan for Rosh Hashanah: start at the end (Tishrei 2011 part 3)

Rosh Hashanah is the first of the holidays in Tishrei, and having a detailed plan for Rosh Hashanah helps you get it under control and done so you can enjoy the holiday. In part 1, we talked about preparation and in part 2, we talked more about menu planning. Now were moving on to how to put it all together!

1. Set your goal.

2. Menu planning.

3. Master Grocery Shopping List.

4. Be flexible in shopping.

5. Make a detailed cooking plan.

6. Keep it simple!

#5 and #6 are really the keys for managing your time. We all want to enjoy the holidays and not go crazy as we prepare for it, right?  Plan it out and keep it simple to succeed!

The basic premise for preparing this detailed plan starts at the end: what do you want to accomplish? For me, I want a clean house and kitchen, food my family likes prepared and ready to go, some spiritual preparation for myself, and my kids ready for the holiday (learning).

The next step is to write out what needs to be done to meet each of the goals you wrote out and put them on days. I’ve finally got my menu plan done, so next up comes the grocery list and my detailed plan. Keep in mind all of the things you need to do: manage space for guests, clean the house, shop, find machzorim, etc. For cooking, don’t be afraid to double up in your oven–but only on things that need the same temperature and aren’t delicate (to absorb the cooking smells!). Plan it out so you have enough room for things you need to bake and cook on the stovetop.

Be sure to have some entertainment ready for you hours of prep. You can download shiurim, most for free (see Tishrei Inspiration). If music gets you going, then do that.

Hang in there!
