Chesed meals (part 4): Some nice touches

(Here are Chesed meals part 1, part 2, and part 3.)

There are always some meals that stand out to the recipient. Some people go above and beyond! Of course, these ideas are above and beyond, but they are always appreciated. Here are some thoughts on how to make your meal extra special.

  • Include a small gift or special treat for older siblings for baby meals. I do a big brother/big sister pack with a few items in a fun party favors bag: a clear chapstick (like one of these), stickers, a ball, small notebook, crayons, etc–check out a dollar store for other ideas. EVERYONE LOVES these!
  • Have your own children design some part of the meal or decor: a card, the bag (I turn brown paper grocery bags inside out and use that!), the menu background, etc.
  • In the family will be in the hospital over Shabbat, send a nice disposable tablecloth, some nice disposable dishes, maybe even a fancy disposable cup to sub for the kiddush cup. A couple of tealights might be needed, too. We want to bring a taste of a regular Shabbat to them!
  • Send a bottle of non-alcoholic fizzy juice or cider if the occasion is a celebration.
  • Send a casserole or some other meal to freeze for another night (even a second helping of your meal). Be sure to identify it and give cooking instructions!

I’m sure there are more, and I’d love to hear about them. Please comment with your ideas below!
