An emergency kit for your car

Do you have an emergency kit for your car?

What you need really depends on how you use your car. If you are living in an urban area, you would need different equipment than those who live in a rural area, especially in more extreme weather. If you regularly drive children, you have different needs from a single commuter.

Here are some things that are in our car kits:

  • A basic first aid kit (here is a good start)
  • Some flares or other bright lights
  • A flashlight (LED)
  • A single-use camera (I got one before we got cell phones with cameras, but you might need to take photos of something)
  • A gallon (or a few bottles) of water. This comes in handy if you are stuck and can be used if your car overheats–especially needed in the summer!
  • Jumper cables or a jump starter (this one also has a light and air compressor to reinflate tires as needed!)
  • A spare tire and/or a temporary fix (like this)
  • A blanket (or several, if you regularly have multiple passengers)
  • An ice scraper and gloves
  • A powered off old cell phone (you can always still call 911, but you’ll have to recharge the battery as needed.)
  • A roll of duct tape
  • A roll of paper towels or a few rags
  • A few protein bars or other long term storage food
  • A few basic tools: screwdriver with changeable head, penknife, adjustable wrench
  • Tehillim and/or a small siddur
  • For kids, you can add an extra outfit for each and diapers and wipes as needed
  • Depending on your car, you could also include oil, antifreeze, sparkplugs, etc.
