Chayei Sarah: Resources and ideas!

This week’s parsha is Chayei Sarah, the life of Sarah. It starts with…her death. Avraham buries her in a cave he purchases. A family servant goes out in search of a women to marry Yitzchak, finds Rivka because of her kindness, and Yitchak marries her. Avraham remarries (and fathers other sons) and dies. He is buried beside Sarah.

Links: Here are the Aish, Torahtots, and Chabad pages on Chayei Sarah. You can do some learning beyond pshat, too. Here are some coloring sheets, a parsha song, and a fun video from Itche Kadoozy (my older boys love this series).

Ideas:

  • Reenact scenes from the parsha – see our little people scene above (Yes, she’s holding a cat. Pretend it’s a bucket, OK?)
  • Make wedding cake balls for Yitzhak and Rivka (for Shabbat dessert). Here is a link to some photos of ours and a tutorial. The kids decorated these very enthusiastically!

  • Talk about and work on the mitzva of chesed (kindness).
  • Make a well or a candy or vegetable well
  • Make camels–I love the idea of shnitzel “camels” around a honey mustard dipping sauce “well.” You can make a camel cookie cutter using this tutorial (foil pan – I’ve used a soda can for less complicated shapes.)
  • Make a cave cake
  • Try some flavored agua fresca
