Oh boy, does this parsha have some delicate concepts. Like the rape of Dina and killing all the males of the city? Rachel dying in childbirth? Yeah. We’re not really going there yet (the men kidnapped and hurt Dina, and Shimon and Levi rescued her, killing everyone like Hashem said, Rachel died). We talked about our need to do our part–when Yaakov knew that Esav was coming, he didn’t depend only on Hashem. Yes, he prayed, but he sent gifts and he prepared for fighting just in case. And Yaakov becomes Yisrael after wrestling an angel. (Plus lots and lots of lineage!)
Another interesting note: there is a different Haftorah for Sephardim and some Ashkenazim this week!
Links: Here are the Aish, Torahtots, Torah.org, and Chabad pages on Vayishlach. Here are some coloring sheets, a parsha song, and a fun video from Itche Kadoozy (my older boys love this silly series).
You could make a Hebrew name collage (Yaakov’s name is changed to Yisrael in this parsha)
parsha insights and a sweet and sour chicken recipe (contrasting flavors!),
Or another cake idea:
How about a family tree or geneology mobile to get a handle on all those names?
We going with some work on the movable alefbet on the name change
a review with the kids of our emergency plan (our version of doing our hishtadlus – our part to prepare!),
and twisted challah (e.g. wrestling).
We are also going to start on some Hanuka crafts so we can get them sent out to various family members in time. What are you doing for this week’s parsha?
