The plague of darkness (Bo/Passover)

In this week’s parsha (Bo), we get the last three of the ten plagues of Egypt. One of these is darkness-but not just darkness. It was a blackness so heavy the Egyptians couldn’t move anywhere!

Here is what we did for the kids (similar to this.)

We started by shaving and chopping dark colored crayons with a butter knife. We did a red one, too, just to swirl in some color.

Next, we cut out some tiny foil people (fold up the foil and cut out half a person, then open.)

On a piece of waxed paper, put the people, and then top with the crayon pieces.

Press with a medium hot iron until the people are swallowed up by darkness. The silver foil stands out in the dark seas of wax.

(We cut ours out for the parsha boxes we send with a group of families–this week is our turn again.)

Sure! We have a group of five homeschooling families, and each week, one is in charge of preparing a parsha box for the other four families and delivering it. The box is filled with things that relate to the parsha somehow–for this week, we had a dvar Torah from each of my older kids, a clay heart (hardened:) ) with a pei on it, some matza from our matza making, a melted crayon “darkness” activity, and some other small things. People have printed off science experiments, sent project pieces or coloring pages, made a mystery touch and feel box, etc.

We really get to focus on a parsha every 5 weeks, and the other weeks, we get to see other people’s creativity and do their activities (in addition to our own). It’s been good learning, and a lot of fun!
