Keep an eye out for Purim finds!

Any ready-to-eat foods or drinks, including th...Yes, Purim is weeks away. Five weeks, that is. But if you want to save money and still put together nice mishloach manot (mm) packages (gifts of food), now is the time to start looking for your “anchor” item and pulling together the things you want to include. That way, you aren’t paying full price for the goods last minute – or just putting in whatever you have in your cupboard!

You don’t have to have anything set in stone (or hamentashen!), but there are a few things that would be helpful to have in mind in these next few weeks.

  • First, approximately how many mm will you give? 5 is very different than 25 or 50. Are these all for families or are some for kids? (Some families have kids give their own to other kids, but these packages would probably be smaller.) A list from last year would probably be very helpful here–do you have one? If so, update it, and if not, start one! I just have an excel doc with people we send to and their addresses.
  • Next, what are you planning to spend? If it’s $50 total or $350 total, it doesn’t matter, but get some idea so you can move on to…
  • How much does that work out to per basket? Some people try for $1 per mm, which means they can give more, and some might go for $15 per basket, which means less packages. Just an idea so you can…
  • Be on the lookout for deals for containers and things you want to include, including an “anchor” item, especially if you are planning a theme.
  • If you are theme people, now is the time! I have a list of themes that I have seen and liked and/or done in previous years, so I always have some ideas. Sometimes I’ll come across a huge sale on something and work around that, and other times–like last year, but I was 36 weeks pregnant on Purim–we’re set weeks in advance. We usually do a theme kind of loosely, but there are people who do it all the way up to the poem written just for the mm baskets.

Obviously, no rush, but we try to be the best steward of the resources we have, and that means thinking ahead when you can. Even starting to think about Purim logistics will get you on track to a more organized Purim.

Have you started thinking Purim thoughts at all yet?
