Two weeks until Purim!

Are you getting ready?

I know some people like to wait until the last minute, but I’m a planner. (I’m sure you may have guessed that by now!)I’m working on our Purim plans.

If you haven’t started planning yet, it’s not too late. You can still get things together and have an easy Purim. There are four mitzvot to make sure you cover: listen to the story (megillah), mishloach manot (gift of food), give charity (matanot la’evyonim), and have a festive meal (seuda). Here are the things to think about:

  • Prepare for the fast of Ester (the day before)
  • Costumes for each person who is dressing up
  • Mishloach manot: containers and contents (and at least one per family member that fulfill the mitzvah)
  • plans for matanot la’evyonim: preferably distributed on that day (many rabbis and shuls do this)
  • Seudah plans: guests, menu, timing
  • Megilla plans: when and who, be sure to find a second reading if one person will be with the kids
  • Drinking plans: if you will be drinking, be sure to have a safe ride home.

We’re almost to the month of Adar (it’s Rosh Hodesh tonight!)

not to be too picky, but ta’anit esther is for all who keep Purim, not just firstborns (next month though…)
(some even argue, based on the Rambam (YaD) Hilchos Megilla 2,18, that
Ta’anit Esther will even apply in the times of Mashiach)

Wow, you are totally right! That’s what happens when I’m actually writing posts late at night. I’ve updated the post. Thanks for catching it!
