Packing for a Shabbat away (for 6 people!)

We have spent two of the past three Shabbatot in a neighboring community, one on not much notice – like a few hours. And really, the packing was pretty quick, and coming home and unpacking even easier. Want to know how we did it?

Each person’s complete outfit was laid out (down to underwear and socks), rolled up, and secured with their color of rubber band.  I put these on one side of a laundry basket, then put a few extra things into a grocery bag (extra underwear for our potty training kid, an extra outfit for my baby, etc.) and put that on the side. Pjs for everyone, a small bag of toiletries, and a bag of diaper necessities went on top, along with  loveys. One organized container for everyone. And we were off!

When we got there, each person’s clothing and pjs were set out together, and the other bags set aside to be used as needed. The basket was empty, but not for long! Everyone put their dirty clothes and pjs in the basket, and when it was time to go, the bags went on top. When we got home, the few things in the bags got put away and the laundry dumped into the laundry bin.

And we were unpacked! (I took a few pictures of the loaded basket, but they seem to have disappeared somewhere. So use your imagination!)

How do you keep packing and short trips manageable?

  1. That is awesome! I’m totally keeping this in mind for when I pack for Pesach!

I do it with suitcases when we’re going away for longer, too. Then they (or you) can just grab a roll and they have a whole outfit laid out!

Just went away for shabbos and realized my usual packing method – ie dump everything in the car- wasn’t working, searched your website for an idea and did the laundry basket- it was great!
