A simple and FUN kid’s party

You know how I wrote before about simple kids’ birthday party ideas? Here are some photos of a real party we had this spring. Not as slick and glossy as those perfect parties you read about, but the kids had a fantastic time!

For my older son’s party (with 3 guests plus his brothers), we started with our craft. I always line the table with easy-to-clean-up butcher paper (a roll lasts forever!) and set up the craft beforehand so the kids have something to start on right when they walk in.

Here’s how I started setting up the craft  (they decorated buckets to take home with stickers, glitter glue, permanent markers, and more). Then the boys took over and set it up how they preferred it. Different aesthetics, I guess. 🙂

They decorated these buckets, then played with balloons until dinner time – we bought everyone a $2 pump with a bunch of long balloons for twisting. We let them go crazy, and they did it for 40 minutes! I had originally thought to try and provide some instruction on making animals or other shapes, but once they figured out how to get the balloons inflated (and I tied them), they went to town on them themselves. They made great fantastical shapes!

Then they ate, had their own magical cupcake (birthday boys’ choice – see below), “magic” drink, and sherbet and sang together.

Last, we had a treat hunt with fun size pieces of candy in the playroom (it was supposed to be outside, but the weather was very uncooperative). Everyone found 5, then helped the others. They had a built in party favor bag (bucket) and fillings (ballon pump, balloon animals, and candy).

Fun was had by all. 🙂

A note about the cupcakes (not for the food-coloring shy among us!): the birthday boy wanted a magical theme, so I used a white cake recipe and dyed four portions (red/pink, yellow, green, and blue) and left one slightly bigger batch white. I spread a spoonful of white batter on the bottom and sides, then added the other colors one on top of the other without stirring. Then I topped the half full cups of batters with more white and spread it around, and then baked them as I normally would. Some of them had some color that escaped on top, but most of them just looked like a white cupcake.

Then I iced them with white frosting and called them “plain white cupcakes” – until the birthday boy bit into his to discover his “magical” surprise! I could only get the photo above of the finished cupcake though–they went quickly.

And there you have it. A relatively simple, easy, and FUN party!
