“Magic” drinks (kid’s party ideas)

Remember how I wrote about simple party ideas and gave a peek into one of our birthday parties?

Here is another quick and easy thing I did for that magic trick party that was a hit.

I took a few packets of koolaid we had lying around (I usually use it for scent and a little color when I make play dough) and added the sugar, each to their own sandwich baggie. And yep, I labeled them.

They all look kind of whitish, which adds to the mystery around this trick for the kids. Then I put a heaping spoonful of each into its own small glass.

When I brought out the glasses for the kids, I hid them all in a deep tray a little above the kids sight lines (so they couldn’t see the powder but could see most of the glass.) You could also just hold it in your hand with the bottom covered by your fingers. Then I told them we just had water to drink for the party – and to their credit, no one complained or even looked upset. I poured water into the first glass…

and it turned orange. I muttered a little about city water and poured the second glass…blue! Then red.

The kids all exclaimed about it and tried to figure out how I was doing it throughout, checking out the pitcher and then finally the glasses. They knew it was a trick and were curious to figure out how it was done.

Obviously, while I was pouring, I couldn’t take pictures, so we then did a second set open on the counter for the kids to master the “magic” and the rest of the kids to drink. That’s where the pictures come from.

Incidentally, this was the first time I had made koolaid with my kids (we really do drink water most of the time), but later that day, my then almost 8 year old said, “Making koolaid has been one of my favorite things to do since I was a little boy!”

So there you go: quick, fun, interesting, and classic. 😉
