The time between the 17th of Tammuz and the 9th of Av are a time of restriction. For example, haircuts and music are two things that are restricted starting from the first fast (for the three weeks).
When Av begins, we diminish [our] rejoicing” (Talmud, Taanit 26b).
During the 9 days from Rosh Chodesh (the new month of) Av leading up to the fast of Tisha B’Av, the rules get more strict, and we refrain from more joyful things (see an outline here). Specific things are different among different sects and lineages, so be sure you check out what yours are and when they start.
This year (2012), Rosh Chodesh Av is Thursday night and Friday.
These include
- Bathing for pleasure / swimming
- Laundry (and wearing freshly laundered clothing or brand new clothing)
- Eating meat and drinking wine (not including Shabbat or a siyum)
Practically, this means that NOW is the time to get laundry done, prepare clothes to wear, and think about the meatless meals for the upcoming week. I’m writing up our menu and more ideas, which I’ll be posting soon (bli neder).
Time to get to work!
