Matot-Massei: Resources and Ideas

English: English translation of hebrew version...

This week is a double parsha. The Israelites war against Midian and the Torah gives a detailed account of the war spoils and how they were divided. Then the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh ask for the lands east of the Jordan  – it’s good pastureland. Moses is angry at first, but agrees if they help conquer the lands west of the Jordan.

We review the 42 camping spots and journeys of Israel. The boundaries of the Promised Land are given, and cities of refuge are designated as havens for accidental murderers. The daughters of Tzelafchad from last week marry within their own tribe of Manasseh to keep their land in their tribe.

With the focus on laws and war, it’s a little harder to come up with creative ideas. I’d love to hear from you on yours! Here’s a another good, kid-friendly summary and you can find some related Hebrew copywork here (scroll down).
