Yom Kippur starts at sundown on Tuesday, 9/25/2012.
Erev Yom Kippur is treated like a yom tov, and it’s tradition to eat two meals with bread: the first, usually with fish, and a second to “top off” your tank before the fast. Nothing too salty or spicy, but something to stick to your ribs and make the fast better – so lots of water, too! (Start drinking now, if you aren’t already!) Here are our menus for these meals:
Lunch:
- Challah with homemade dips and salads
- Broth soup with noodles
- Moroccan fish balls
- Potato pierogies
- Sauteed cinnamon apples
Dinner (Before the fast):
- Challah and accompaniments
- Broth soup with kreplach / noodles
- Schnitzel (like chicken nuggets, for the kids)
- Chicken with a brown sugar paprika spice rub
- watermelon and other fruit for dessert
The kids will be getting packed lunches for Yom Kippur itself here. Some people make them a real Shabbat / Yom Tov meal, but my kids prefer dairy meals and love the novelty of a packed lunch!
Break the fast plans:
- Drinks!
- Grilled cheese and tomato soup (yes, really…who am I to argue?).
