Tu B’Shevat is coming up – this Shabbat!

Some fabulous craft ideas from Creative Jewish Mom

Tu B’Shevat is this Shabbat – Shabbat Beshalach. Tu B’Shevat is the new year for the trees, or more precisely, one of the new years…for more discussion, see here for the Chabad main page or here for the Aish page. Here are some recipe ideas, projects for kids, and coloring pages.

One way to celebrate the day is to eat fruits, especially those from the land of Israel: Olives, dates, figs, pomegranates, and grapes. Some add in other things, like carob – here are some other customs. It’s also a time for a shehechianu on a new fruit. Fruit is always a welcome addition to our Shabbat table.

This Shabbat is also Shabbat Shirah, when we read the song of the sea, sung after we crossed the parted red sea. Some people have a tradition to leave bread crumbs out for the birds to remember the birds eating up the manna spread by people trying to make Moshe look like a liar.

Enjoy this special Shabbat!
