Parsha projects: Tetzaveh

This week, we had some fun with the parsha, despite the difficulty of a parsha filled with logistics. (See ideas and resources here).

First, we made the graham cracker choshen (breastplate) with the ideas from this link. Except we didn’t have a lot of peanut butter, so I made frosting. A little sweet for an adult palate, but the kids sure enjoyed it! And we’re bringing ingredients to make more to a friend’s table this week. Sharing the fun!

Next, we decorated and cut out paper cohen dolls and clothes to dress up: here‘s the link for that.

And last, my older boys love sewing. They do it all by themselves, and if the stitches fail, they work on different ones. Good natural consequences, good fine motor skills exercise.

They make stuffed animals for themselves often (felt, stuffing, and sometimes googly eyes). And so we took some of that felt (we used stiffened felt for this project) and cut it in the shape of the coat from the dress up paper dolls (above), and then had them sew on little bells and red “pomegranate” beads. They could dress up the paper dolls with this–although to be honest, the dolls are not a big hit. Coloring them, yes, sewing for them, yes.

But these are mostly used as an instrument. For now, at least. We’ll see how long they last!

If I had been a little truer to color, it would have been a blue-green coat, gold bells, and different colored pomegranate shapes, but I went with what we had.

Although I was a little worried about how dry this parsha can be for kids, we have had a blast with the parsha this week!
